Uncle Tom's Cabin or Life Among The Lowly by Harriet Beecher Stowe by Raymond Weaver
The 1938 Limited Edition Clubs illustrated edition of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin,' Harriet Beecher Stowe's classic antebellum novel of Southern plantation slave life, first published in 1852. This fine press edition from 1938 is beautifully bound and embellished with 16 full-page illustrations by Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias (1904–1957). This is number 1180 of 1500 copies signed by Miguel Covarrubias. "The impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the conscience of the nation, already tender from the outrages of the Fugitive Slave Law, was such that when Stowe came to the White House in 1862, Abraham Lincoln is said to have greeted her with the words, 'So you're the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war.'"
This edition, designed by John S. Fass, was printed at New York's Harbor Press. The book is bound in boards covered with three-quarter morocco leather and a hand-marbled sheet, and the text is printed on white rag paper. The work was illustrated with sixteen lithographs drawn on stone by Mexican caricaturist Miguel Covarrubias. Covarrubias began his career as a caricaturist for Mexican newspapers, then studied in New York and worked for Vanity Fair. The pages are clean; the spine is tight, there is some fading and a 1/2-inch chip in the top right corner of the spine. No slipcover.
