Shakespeare Literature Primers by Dr. Edward Dowden circa 1883

Summing up in a tiny manual of fewer than two hundred pages, some account of the poet himself, his works, and his critics have been entrusted to Dr. Dowden, who has written much on his present subject. That the task has been altogether satisfactorily done, we can scarcely admit. Still, looking at the enormous difficulties in his way, we must acknowledge that Dr. Dowden has been, on the whole, wonderfully successful. The most important part of the book is the chapter called “ Introduction to the Plays and Poems.” The greatest service a teacher can render to the pupil studying Shakespeare is to hint at what he is to look for in each play. Dr. Dowden does this chiefly by the brilliant and subtle use of the characteristics of each dramatic character. For such an account, the present book would have afforded no space, so Dr. Dowden contents himself with a few words on the chief characters of each play. Sometimes, Dr. Dowden falls into the error of vagueness. I believe the Shakespearean collector will well appreciate this book.
