Large 18" Vintage Studio Folk Art Cocomat & Vine Sculptural Jar, c. 1990s
An exceptional, oversized vintage studio folk art vessel displaying a commanding presence and rich organic texture. Purchased in the 1990s at the prestigious Santa Barbara Antique Mart, this large-scale jar beautifully bridges the gap between American Primitive form and tropical, texture-forward materiality. It is an ideal sculptural element for Organic Modern, Wabi-Sabi, or High-End Coastal Interiors.
Artistry & Construction:
Body: Hand-wrapped in thick, beautifully variegated sheets of natural cocomat (coconut coir) fiber, displaying rich golden and caramel tones.
Rim & Binding: The substantial rim is masterfully bound in tight, precise, continuous spiral wraps of split rattan cane reed.
Handles: Four sturdy, structural handles formed from stripped native hardwood vine segments, notched and seamlessly integrated into the shoulder of the piece.
Interior: A masterfully hand-coiled structural skeleton that ensures the piece remains completely rigid and holds its broad, spherical shape perfectly.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. Meticulously preserved with no fraying or balding to the cocomat fiber, tight and uncompromised structural lashing, and structurally sound vine handles. Completely free of dry rot or loose weaving.
