Herman Bang - Vaerker I Mindeudgave.
Herman Bang - Værker Mindeudgave Vol. 4, 1821, Danish, Fjerde Bind , Featuring Tine and Ludvigsbakke
Bang is primarily concerned with "quiet existences," the disregarded and ignored people living boring and unimportant lives. He is especially interested in describing lonely or isolated women.
Bang's works earned him renown as a leading European impressionist writer. Bang's last years were embittered by persecution and declining health. He traveled widely in Europe, and during a lecture tour of the United States, he was taken ill on the train and died in Ogden, Utah.
Tine (1889), which has the war with Prussia in 1864 (the Second War of Schleswig) as background, tells the tragic love story of a young girl on the island of Als.
Herman Bang- Vaeker I Mindeudgave bvol 4.
Ludvigbakke, Ida, and Karl have known each other since childhood. Karl von Eichbaum was the son of the owner of the farm, "Ludvigbakke," and Ida Brandt was the estate manager's daughter. Now, they meet again at the Municipal Hospital in Copenhagen, where Ida works as a nurse, and Karl has a subordinate office position. The modest and sacrificial Ida, who, after her mother's death, has quite a net worth, falls in love with the lazy Karl, who still lives at home with his mother and lets himself be cared for. His parents had to sell the farm due to financial problems, but the mother tried to maintain the facade.
Ida's sharp sensory memory evokes memories of the good times at Ludvigsbakke as a contrast to the busy and harsh work with the sick and crying patients at the hospital. Ida dreams of finding a real home, but Karl can not decide. He starts riding with Kate, the daughter of a butter wholesaler who has taken over Ludvigsbakke. His mother lays out further plans. And it will be a time of humiliation for "the little Miss Brandt," as Karl's mother calls her.
I believe this will be a pleasant find for fans of Herman Bang, for the newly initiated Tine is a perfect choice.
